The number 8 symbolizes balance and harvest. It is the perfect symbol for the Fall Equinox! We are currently in balance of light and dark, and for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it is harvest time. The sun has just moved into the sign of Libra – the astrological symbol of balance and harmony.
The great symbol of balance in the Tarot is Trump 8, Justice. The Wild Unknown Tarot uses a picture of a black cat and white cat separated by a sword. True justice in the “real” world (meaning the natural world!) is that all things will find balance. Each opposite has its complement, and these pairs create all forms of balance. This is akin to the concept of karma. What comes around, goes around.
And so now, at harvest time, it is an opportunity for us to look back at what we have planted – literally and metaphorically – and what we are harvesting. Much of our planting is often unconscious, and so, at harvest time, we have a chance to check in, see what is coming through in our lives and act with awareness to shift our intentions for the second half of the year.
8 of wands shows a circle of 7 wands on the ground and one wand receiving a rainbow bolt of lightening from above. I see this as a vision of truth, an intuitive “hit”, an undeniable symbol of creative and passionate inspiration. What fires you up? What “download” are you getting from the universe about something you would like to experience? Tune in and follow the spark. It will light you up!
8 of Swords shows a butterfly almost on the edge of unfolding her brand new wings. This is a still point in which there is no turning back. Freedom is essential and inevitable but scary. This is a precious and delicate time to be careful to unfold with awareness and caution.
8 of cups is a hard one to look at. All those broken cups. This is the realm of emotion. Here we have what once was a set of full cups now all totally empty and broken. I see this as rock bottom. With the 8 here, there is no where to go but up. This is a painful state, but it speaks to the total bitter end of a certain emotional state.
8 of Pentacles is a lovely fall symbol of the spider spinning her web. She is creating a fully balanced work of art that has a very practical purpose. This is an expression of her nature, and it is truly a symbol of life, death and creative expression.
This brings to mind a favorite witchy chant:
“We are the flow, we are the ebb, we are the weavers, we are the web”
